So , I shouldn't hit /. a couple times a second then for a couple hours solid then? -----Original Message----- From: plug-discuss-bounces@lists.plug.phoenix.az.us [mailto:plug-discuss-bounces@lists.plug.phoenix.az.us] On Behalf Of Brock Sent: Friday, October 13, 2006 3:19 PM To: Main PLUG discussion list Subject: Re: Internet is up verification On 2006.10.12.15.30, Shawn Badger wrote: | I was wondering if anybody knows of website that will allow you to ping | and do wgets every couple seconds to verify your Internet connectivity? | I have thought about just polling some of my favorite sites every couple | seconds, but then I thought, they may not appreciate that kind of | traffic and may block my request. Does anybody know if say google or /. | blocks IP's for this reason and if there is a service out there that | specifically allows for this kind of test? Speaking of pinging /. -- here is a funny story. My Network admin is testing out this new firewall monitoring tool thingie which shows what sites people are currently browsing (kinda like watching the tail of a forced squid proxy, I suppose). He wanted me to test it out so I go to /. -- but the thing is scrolling so fast that he can't pick out my /. out of the rest of the network's activity. So I say ok -- while (true) ; do wget http://slashdot.org/ ; done and go back over to his desk. We still don't see it. Mess around with the various filter settings and can't figure it out. No big deal, it was just for fun anyway. I go back to my desk, and attempt to click on a /. article that was on my screen. I get: "Either your network or ip address has been banned from Slashdot" in nice big letters on a lovely pink/purple background along with instructions on how to request an un-blocking. I then remembered to kill my bash script. That was a week and a half ago. I've sent them a few requests, and the last one even mentions that we only have one office-wide external IP that they've blocked and that my coworkers are starting to leave me threatening notes.... But still we're blocked. There may be a lesson to be learned here :) --Brock --------------------------------------------------- PLUG-discuss mailing list - PLUG-discuss@lists.plug.phoenix.az.us To subscribe, unsubscribe, or to change you mail settings: http://lists.PLUG.phoenix.az.us/mailman/listinfo/plug-discuss --------------------------------------------------- PLUG-discuss mailing list - PLUG-discuss@lists.plug.phoenix.az.us To subscribe, unsubscribe, or to change you mail settings: http://lists.PLUG.phoenix.az.us/mailman/listinfo/plug-discuss
