In case any of you are wondering, I downloaded the "alternate" install
ISO and it provides several install options not on the main LiveCD
installer.

I picked text mode and it's been much less painful on the old, slow
laptop. It's still taking a while but that's expected. The text install
is no more complex or harder to use than the LiveCD install, so I'd
recommend it to anyone installing on older hardware.
