Originally there was work being done to ship SLES, but that has fallen to the side for the time being. I think the switch to RH was basically because that is what customers wanted. While RH tries to only do security updates and such for a particular release they do occasionally allow changes to creep in that cause interface changes. I am guessing the main difference between RHEL and CentOS is that you have a support contract with RH?
