Keep in mind, if you read from MP3, then edit, then write to MP3, you will experience signal degradation.  If you're going to write it to a CD, it may be better to output to a lossless format like WAV or FLAC.

Note also that what you're proposing is "creating a derivative work" under copyright law, so make sure you have proper permission from the original author of the MP3 audio you wish to modify (i.e. CreativeCommons license, public domain, explicit license, etc...) before you pass it on to others or play it for a group.
