I remember hurrying to get one so I wouldn't get stuck with Windows95, which I believe came out in August of that year. I also ordered FreeBSD, but being clueless about Unix, it didn't quite work out. When RedHat 4.0 came out in 1996, I read some good reviews and ordered it shortly thereafter. Almost everything "just worked" right out of the box, including X. I couldn't, though, figure out how to get it to use the modem. A co-worker who had been into Linux about 6 months longer then I had gave me a chat script to use with expect for modem dialling and logging in to a ppp session. I won't say that Linux changed my life, but it has enabled me to learn enough to leverage into a living, so I guess I owe Linus at least a pizza.
