Yes, IBM bought Lotus some 5 years ago for cash to compete with Micro$ in  
the office environment.  Previously when Visicalc was on the brink of  
failure, Lotus bought them on the cheap.  I believe Visacalc pre-dated the  
original IBM PC since it first ran on the Apple II.
