As I drove home, I thought I should temper my discussion a little bit. The last time I tested a consumer grade CF card was about 3 years ago. For repeated small writes it failed in less than one hour. But that was three years ago and I expect that even the less expensive consumer grade CF cards would to better than that now. The point being that my predictions of when a consumer grade card would fail are based on somewhat educated guessing. I would not be too surprised if someone can claim running a Linux box on a recent consumer grade CF for quite some time.
