I ran into a similar problem a few weeks ago. I could not log in as a user, but root was ok. I am running SuSE 9.1. The only way I was able to fix my issue was to use the system repair function on the installation cd's/dvd. Repaired all of my permissions and missing/corrupted files/permissions. Hope this helps..
