(this *is* like golf, right?) > Golf scoring sounds good to me: 67389 I've been using Linux so long that I virtually cannot use Windows - it's too hard - kinda like running hurdles in a straitjacket. Good thing my business partner is a Windows Wonk. Why I use Linux - let me count the ways... 1. Linux is customizable so it will support my business needs and I don't have to try to jam the square OS peg into the round business hole (or the other way around). 2. Linux is good business. At this point, our web site has three OSS products and a some custom code (including a total rewrite of another OSS package) to produce a service that we offer for free to our clients that is simply not available in the commercial world for under $2,500. Total effort to develop, test and deploy: 60 hours. Licensing costs/royalties to pay: $0.00. Just looking at the labor cost to produce this, we are about even compared to the square-peg/round-hole solution that a commercial offering would have given us. 3. I'm running our business accounting on Linux. Accounting software cost - $0.00 4. The web site is Linux. Using Linux for the web site allows me to abstract the OS I use for maintaining it and running the business. I can sit down at my Linux workstation or use a Windows laptop and develop/maintain to my heart's content. 5. Linux is modular, so I can swap out pieces I don't like with ones that do what I want. 6. Same thing with OSS. I just integrated three OSS packages (10 hours effort) that could not have been done with proprietary software. 7. I use Linux because it just works.
