In Thunderbird and gedit, and I think elsewhere, my numeric keypad insists on being numeric when I have the shift key down, even with NumLock turned off. Normally (under my Windows persona) I would place the cursor at the beginning of an area, hold the shift key, and use the arrow keys to move across and highlight a piece of text. This doesn't work in X using the numeric keypad -- when I press the shift key, it does numerics instead of positioning. I have to use those other arrow keys, which are far less efficient for me. Is there a way to correct this so that NumLock remains in effect with the shift key down? I've noticed that under CentOS the cut and paste operations are operating much more consistently than they previously did under Linux, so this NumLock thing is the last frontier as far as local operations are concerned. (Still some flukes when logging onto other boxes, but that's another day's battle.)
