Lynn - I Googled for "creating favicon linux"
and the first page up was this:

"How to create and use shortcut (favicon) icons on your pages"
They say to start with the Gimp, create a 16x16 .png
image, then use a special utility to convert it to
a favicon.

There were a lot of hits on that search --
this was only the first one.
