This is one of the coolest intrinsic features of Linux! The X desktop is just another application, over and above your basic system, and you virtually *always* have access to a command prompt -- in fact to several command-prompt windows -- no matter how bad things go with X, or in case you should decide to shut X down for some reason. Just type Ctrl-Alt-F1 and log in. Want another window? Try Ctrl-Alt-F2 thru F6 for up to six different environments you can have active at the same time, alongside the GUI. Incidentally, you can have two GUI desktops running too, if you really want to -- both active, not one of them dormant as is the case with WinXP's "switch users" feature. Here's a Question: if I gave up one of my six virtual consoles, could I then start up a third full X server environment? MS Windows sometimes responds more rapidly to windowed operations because the GUI is so tightly integrated to the OS. But if your GUI breaks, your system is broken. Linux lets you get to a full-powered command prompt at a moment's notice, and in most cases to reconfigure and bring up the GUI without rebooting.
