There is a way in DOS that you can emulate network printing to LPT ports. I had a client that was running a very, very old auto loan program (Autostar I think) and it required ports LPT1, to LPT3. Everyone had their own printer but every printer had a specific task. 1 person was receipts, 1 person was coupons, 1 person was statements, etc... and everyone had the ability to print to each other's printer via LPT ports in the software because that's the only way the software would print. I don't remember how I did it but I did have a login script that did the LPT mapping for each computer.
