Probably a bug with the gstreamer software. The other problem I had with Ubuntu was not having DMA access on my DVD player. Even though the module (amd74xx, I have an NForce mobo) was loaded I gather it wasn't loaded fast enough. I had to modify my /etc/modules and put the amd74xx at the very beginning. From what I read, if you don't put your chipset in there it will load the generic modules first which will stop DMA from working. After a quick reboot, I was then able to edit my /etc/bootmisc.sh (something like that) and put /sbin/hdparm -d1 /dev/hdb and the same for /dev/hdc. DMA now works on it. Sorry for the off topic post. I just went through this last night and thought others might find it useful.
