If you have room somewhere to copy the whole partition you can make a
backup to experiment on.

Boot GNU/Linux, dd the partition to a filesystem with room for the
filesystem. Then you can make yet another copy to experiment on, including
putting back on a new partition somewhere for m$ to try to work on.

Don't confuse if (infile) and of (outfile) in the following command!

dd if=/dev/hda1 of=/home/miles/machinename-hda1-26Apr2005.img
