downloaded Ubuntu 5.04 PPC Live CD and tried it on 4 different iMac's -
no success

Probably a part of the problem is that I burned it at 8x and I probably
have to slow it down so I am burning a copy now at 2x

2 of the iMac's ended up failing to get it started because somewhere
along the way it failed to read the CD

1 of them simply went into shock - going to firmware screen

1 (actually an eMac - G4 and not a G3) got all the way to the point
where the screen should have presented the GDM login but never quite
came out of the black and visiting all the virtual terminals failed to
show any error of any kind.

This was a poor experience.

Does anyone have experience with PPC Live CD - any distro?

How about installed distro's in G3 iMac's ?
