Old machines no longer suitable to be a modern desktop can become a firewall, print server, email server, and server many other useful functions. The newest area I've started into which is also based on open source software, Asterisk based PBX servers, looks like it will have the same effect on the phone industry that linux did on the server market. Asterisk is very much like Linux was during the early days; it is good enough now to be deployed as a company's phone system and perform well. If anyone is interested in building one I'd certainly help. I just cut my teeth on my first one this month. Fun stuff!
