I agree with keeping the list as short as possible, welcoming all but  
encouraging our short list.

My vote is for the following list:

Fedora Core 2 and 3
Ubuntu
Mepis
Debian testing
Slackware
Gentoo (*)

(*) Believe it.  These will usually be old Windows hacks who want to try  
how to "really" get things done.  They also enjoy and expect to beat on  
their computers for two months before it works.  They will always be smart  
computer-wise, but not UNIX-wise.  Let them come to installfest for a  
two-hour push forward if they're stuck.  Maybe even force them to be at  
the keyboard.  We have at least three (non-Dennis :-) volunteers that  
could help with this.

As for the pile-of-CD's problem with Debian, that I think is well solved  
with the single Debian net install CD.  You pretty much end up going to  
testing and doing an apt-get dist-upgrade, then installing X and the rest  
over the net anyway.

I'd encourage hardcore users to use both Debian and Slackware.  They're  
both expert flavors, and very different ones, and in my opinion almost  
orthogonal.

I also don't mind including both Ubuntu and Mepis.  If someone could  
provide compelling reasons to exclude either one, I'm all ears.

I vote for FC over Suse.  Suse's idea of troubleshooting is dumping a user  
to a GUI into a relevant /etc file.  Wheee!  Might as well go to FC with  
your own source compiles and get Suse's GUI out of the way.  Just my two  
cents, let the flam^H^H^H^Hdiscussion begin :)

I give an explicit thumbs down for the following:
Red Hat 9 and older
   People who come to us wanting RH9 are those who _finally_ have the time  
to get a Linux on their home box and think they're getting the latest RH.   
Give them FC!  I've experienced my share of script kiddie ownage with 7.3,  
let's not go there.

Mandrake
   Too many fundamental problems, like bad compiles or corrupted copies.   
People get a nice, point-and-click interface to partition their drive and  
install, then boot to a seg fault.



Please bring these newer distros, you never know where we could find the  
next gem.



Please tell me about the new interest in server distros to Installfest.   
I've always thought that the target for Installfest was to roll out  
desktops.
