Craig,
Thanks for the help.  I don't know why, but something I did got it to
work.  I deleted and recreated the empty "mbox" file in the Sent
folder.  That didn't work at first, so I tried configuring KMail. (I
forgot to mention that I was trying to get this to work on a newly
upgraded machine - on which I had the browser and receive mail both
working.)  Sends through KMail failed, too.  But somehow when I started
Evolution again, it worked!
