You're on the right track, Mike (re: culprit comment).

For the XP portion of your menu.lst file, try:
# windoze
title Windoze XP
    rootnoverify (hd1,0)
    chainloader +1
# /windoze
This is presuming that XP is on the first partition of your second 
drive, what would be /dev/hdb1 to linux.
