There are a number of lighter weight webmail things like squirrelmail/neo etc. Horde uses standard protocols - standard tools for most everything - and unbelievable flexibility. You could run the entire setup with preferences stored in LDAP and avoid the use of an SQL server if you desired. Moreover, the fact that Horde uses standard protocols means that you can continue to use your regular mail client application to access your mail and see the same mail (IMAP) - use your email or address book applications to see your own and shared LDAP address books - use your calendar program to access your calendars (iCal type stuff) and even publish your free/busy URL's to off system users. For example, the 'turba' program is the easiest program I have ever used to import contact data into an LDAP data store. Of course setting up LDAP with ACL's, indexing etc. to accommodate this is a rather complicated process. To top it off, there are so many other modules that are available to extend the usage of the system, such as a wiki, filtering integration with procmail or sieve (simplifying construction of filters for users creating the filters), a mini-version for handhelds/wap, time accounting, forums, project management and more... gives you a better idea of the breadth of the project. Of course this flexibility and integration comes at a cost - the cost of making it work. I don't think lightweight would be a reasonable description of the project. But of course, the premise is that it is more in line with feature expectations of Novell's Groupwise server or Microsoft Exchange Server and those aren't lightweight either. Then again, you don't have to pay $100+ per client license and you don't have to purchase other server software (i.e. Windows 2003 Server, Novell NDS) either.
