Multitrack, good quality, a fair number of useful tools and effects. It's pretty much the standard tool out there, for free. http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ But let me say this about compression: I have *never* been satisfied with this. I went through a fair number of < $50 packages out there before finding Audacity, but NONE of them had what I consider even a DECENT compressor. I downloaded add-ins (or whatever thay call them) and found the quality to be HORRIBLE. I mean -- I expect a compressor, cranked up to max, to produce a waveform of more or less uniformly amplitude. But no, what you get is something that looks and sounds very unlike a compressor. I wish I could figure this out! Also slightly annoying is that you have to wait for the effect to process the whole wave (or selected section) before auditing it. You can't compress on the fly and tweak in the settings. It's trial (wait wait wait) and error. Audacity is very nice. I would love to hear other's comments.
