I can understand your point, and agree about the need for community support. While Mepis and PCLOS don't have forums at linuxquestions.org, they do have strong community support and forums of their own. SuSE didn't have a forum at Linuxquestions until recently, but that didn't make SuSE an inconsequential distro. > We can add more distros as we get better at running the > InstallFest and have people that have decided to stick with one > distro and can offer support. I've stuck with Slackware as my main distro for a few years now, and can install it, but I've also used SimplyMepis and PCLOS. > Storm Linux is what I started with which had a lot of promise but > only lasted about two years and then was long gone. I always keep a few spare partitions for trying new distros; that's how I got familiar with the two I mentioned. The only thing I can't comment on personally is upgrading them because, being on a slow dialup modem, I refuse to do upgrades anymore. I tried it once with Slackware, took up days and days of downloading, and ended up breaking a lot of things. It's too close to the InstallFest to get experimental. That would be like trying a recipe for the first time while preparing for a dinner party. What I would like is if several PLUG members would try some of these live-cd distros well in advance of the next InstallFest, and give us their reviews. They are pretty polished and well-designed for desktop use. Just read the reviews on the web! > > As has been said before, we need to focus on getting a working > Linux desktop up on the machine with as much as possible working > including the modem, if that's what they use to connect to the Net. > Jumping from distro to distro rather than learning to diagnois > what needs fixing doesn't make us look good.
