I found a safe and "fun" way to do it... 1. Open the drive and remove the platters. 2. Give platters a full body massage with a strong cobalt magnet 3. Smack the platters a few times with a hammer. 4. Drill small hole 1/4" from the outer edge. 5. Attach random length fishing line between hole and a wooden dowel. Now your hard drive is reduced to a wind chime that a non-techie mom or gramma will love. At least that is what I've been doing with mine for the last 20 years.
