Since "normal" 1024x768 mode worked, I just defaulted back to that mode and used xvidtune to show the full modeline. Here's the final one I'm forcing 1024x768 to be: ModeLine "1024x768" 94.50 1024 1072 1168 1376 768 769 772 808 +hsync +vsync (excuse the wrap-around). This seems to work well.
