Booting rescue CD now so I can do > that... Just editing fstab is not a complete solution. This is the root partition and so it needs changes involving initrd. (http://www.troubleshooters.com/linux/ext2toext3.htm seems to be a good reference on switching back and forth between ext2 and ext3.) This is out of the scope of my experience and I'd have been most of the way done with a new install by now, if I had just done it. I think that is what I will now do. I am learning lots, though!
