OK - just a theory - have absolutely no knowledge of python packaging,
etc.

Why not just apt-get remove python-2.1 python-2.2 python-2.3 and then
apt-get install python-2.3 and you should be certain to have python-2.3
completely installed? Perhaps I've done Windows
administration/maintenance for too long.
