I had all sorts of problem with sound on Mandrake 10.0 (with the same system) I did install the nforce drivers, but they were so new for the 2.6 kernel and instruction so sparse that I continued to have problems. Such as, some programs would not run unless I shut down the sound server first using ArtsControl (I'm not sure of the name but it installs into kicker). Then I got into constant issues of having to modify sound settings and restart the nvsound module, and ALSA and Arts locking each other out. Needless to say, when I installed 10.1 Official, and sound worked without any conflicts (so far), I am a little hesitant to load the nforce drivers and mess everything up again. BTW, thanks for your help, I could not see the posting and thought that unusual that it would take most of the day to even see the post.
