I'm not sure what might be going wrong with the XEphem website, but I doubt that it has disappeared for good. Elwood Downey (the author of XEphem) has been around for *long* time. I would consider him to be a "semi-professional" astronomer, as he has worked with observatories in the past, and there are many professional astronomers (including myself) that have used XEphen in our work for years. As for telescope control software, I've never really messed with any of the software for "small" telescopes, and I've never used the control interface for XEphem, but of the ones available for linux, I would trust the XEphem controller to be the best and most accurate, simply based on what I know about the author. That said, I don't know anything about kstars, so it may very well be just as good, I just don't know anything about it. Incidentally, most of the "big telescopes" run by Steward Observatory at the U of A, actually use a DOS program called PC-TCS. The main reason being that you get the best pointing and tracking accuracy from a non-multitasking OS, since you never know when some process might interrupt your clock and potentially alter the telescope positioning.
