No, I was editing the right file, and it showed the error message after trying 
to access the provider file. Which makes sense, because everything would 
crash after my modem would start, but before it would never actually dial. I 
found mention of this bug when I did some googling.

I edited the file by hand was only after I had tried three times to use the 
network configuration tool. I didn't know about pppconfig- maybe I'll try it 
again sometime. Most Linux newbies wouldn't know about pppconfig, that's why 
I don't think it's a good distro to hand out to newbies.
