Let us know how that works out for you. ;-) I have seen plenty of gentoo'ers doing this with "no apparent problems", but it seems a bit like Russian Roulette to me. The advantage might be that portage has A LOT more bullets than your average revolver. The way I understand portage the chances of having a conflict (especially within the same category of packages) seems fairly unpredictable. If compile time is the problem, I would suggest distcc and maybe tuning your MAKEOPTS to run more parallel threads. If download time/reliability is the problem, there isn't much gentoo can do about that other than letting `emerge -f` trickle down the files before attempting to install. Also note, you could do something like this and come back to check on it periodically. # emerge -f uberpackage && emerge uberpackage I enjoy gentoo better than any other distro I have tried, but this is the biggest problem with the 100% source-based approach. It generally takes me about two days to get everything installed on a typical desktop/laptop or about one day to get everything installed on a dedicated server (fewer bells & whistles). And those times assume a solid, high-speed Internet connection! Of course, after that pain I couldn't imagine running anything else. ...Kevin --------------------------------------------------- PLUG-discuss mailing list - PLUG-discuss@lists.plug.phoenix.az.us To subscribe, unsubscribe, or to change you mail settings: http://lists.PLUG.phoenix.az.us/mailman/listinfo/plug-discuss
