okay, is this a gentoo box, or slackware? Don't know if you mistyped just here, or there, or both, but its: modules-update which is for gentoo (don't know about slackware) if /etc/init.d/alsasound is not present, then just reload all the snd modules: lsmod #then rmmod all the snd-modules - or just reboot. Then try alsamixer....
