o.k., thanks for your helpful suggestions. i'll print these out and give 
them a try. will let you know if i run into any problems. i'll try to 
find my way around samba first (thanks hans) , but failing that i can 
use kevin's example on the command line.  thanks for the  easy to 
understand example. ;-)
