I've been in a situation of using a "fundamentally broken" system before and it sucks, though usually in my case its because I didn't take some downtime to fix it and now its crunchtime. Ever given a thought to learning how to do your work (though I don't know what it is at all) under Knoppix or another "Live" CD? Last month I had to pull the plug on a 50% complete formated system when an emergency call came in. (Talk about a horrible timed home fresh install). Since my data center is 45 minutes away by car even at 1am, I grabbed the handy Knoppix CD and got to work. I was quite happy to save myself the 1.5 hour car ride, even with a good audiobook on the MP3 player. Now granted my work at the time (system administration) was easy to get done with ssh/rdesktop and a working eth0, you may consider leanring to do what you do in Knoppix (even if its a pain in the ass for you, as long as your customers won't notice) and having it as a 'backup' even if you don't start reinstalling willy nilly.
