First, look at dmesg to be sure it's getting assigned to /dev/sda (it most likely is if there's no other scsi drives in the system). Assuming it's there, try doing "fdisk -l /dev/sda", and then mount it. I haven't yet figured out why the 2.6 kernel often doesn't detect the media on it's own like 2.4 did, but running fdisk -l forces it to scan the device. I'm sure there's a far more graceful solution, but I haven't bothered looking for it yet.
