you might want to try this trick i found on the gentoo-wiki a few weeks ago ( http://gentoo-wiki.com/TIP_Fast_Copy ). instead of doing: cp -v file destination you can do tar -cf - file | tar -C destination -xvf - read the wiki for more information and how to do it over ssh.
