We are using a SuSE server which is also used for other things. K12LTSP 4.0 uses Fedora Core 1. But K12LTSP 4.0.1 uses old, out-of-date Red Hat 8.0. (Maybe http://www.k12ltsp.org/contents.html is wrong.) Also, I don't want a complete install solution of KDE, GNOME etc. > > One idea is to use ltspacp (contrib) to copy apps to the LTSP tree. I meant that the server admins can easily update /opt/ltsp/i386 on the server. Overwriting with new software is not the best solution. Using a proper package registration to delete files is better. > > Are there ready-to-install replacements for busybox tools for LTSP 4? > > > Are you trying to remove the busybox functionality that is usually the > front end to pxe booting? I haven't seen it used much beyond that. It is used for everything. If you boot to LTSP using the "shell" service instead of "startx" then you will see that many essential tools (like find, dmesg, tee, ed, vi)) are missing and other tools have limited functionality (like grep). To me it doesn't make sense to use lightweight busybox tools, but still use real XFree86 server. > > I am considering just using pkgsrc (which is a package build framework) > > for creating my own LTSP alternative. Okay, I'll let you know as I research some more. I already build Linux package using pkgsrc. So all I need to do is to try do boot with the pxelinux and my own software instead of LTSP. Jeremy C.
