Mike, which distro/version are you using? It's possible that the version of xmms that came with your distro didn't include the ability to play MP3's for legal reasons. You can download and build the source from here (or use the RPM if you're running RedHat/Fedora): http://www.xmms.org/download.php Then do the "./configure; make && make install" dance and you should be good to go.
