Ah, it may be important to know that on the Windows machine, I login as "edski" -- that's the reason for the corresponding /etc/samba/smbusers entry. Note that I have not idea about security in this area. This works on my little network sitting behind a firewall but, outside of that, I have no idea if this configuration is a good or a really, really bad one.
