At the time we implemented version control, subversion was pre-1.0 and we did not trust it for a mission critical installation. This was probably paranoid but CVS was acceptable over proprietary solutions in part because of it's long history and even non-FS/OSS people have heard of it. If I were to implement version control now, this reason for rejecting subversion is not as forceful. 2. Lack of GUI clients. I don't know the situation now but a GUI client for the version control system was important in our choices. (Mostly to sell to management.) At the time, there was no GUI client support for subversion but GUI support for CVS was everywhere. Even most of our proprietary development tools support interaction with a CVS server. As subversion matures, the lack of clients will be filled. In fact, there may be many already available since I haven't looked in a while. For a new installation, subversion is the better choice over CVS as far as the server side operation and features go. The client solution may still force people back to CVS, however.
