actually, thats the safest method. change to vga standard, disable graphical 
boot then shutdown, install new hardware, restart, come up in cli, run 
XFdrake, choose your new card and other options, test it with X. if it works, 
you are in business.

thats how I've done it with many boxen without having to re-install the OS.
