Get Marcel Gagne's book "Moving to Linux--Kiss the Blue Screen of Death 
Goodbye". The majority of the book is on applications: customizing your 
desktop, mail, browsers, word processors, spreadsheets, presentation 
graphics, graphics & art, multimedia, games, . . .

He also writes well--this is one computer book that doesn't bore you to 
tears.
