I have an FTP server (vsftpd) behind a firewall ( Linksys BEFSR41)

PASV mode transfers just are not possible through this thing yet the 
'experts' say that if you have trouble making a connection to any FTP 
server, use PASV mode.

So if I'm behind a FW(firewall) and need to connect to a public (meaning 
PASV mode possible) FTP server and I have problems, I use PASV, right?

Although that's not the case for me, my problem happens to be that 
multiple clients can't gain access to my server if their client doesn't 
automatically detect the transfer mode.
