Thanks for asking.
Not good.  The Mandrake 9 system was up for about 14 hours total before it 
crashed, and the "messages" file showed nothing at all.  I also booted from 
the Red Hat 9.1 partition; on that one, I'm lucky to get three hours, and it 
DOES have those "strange power saving mode" messages.   So perhaps these are 
two different problems.  I have not had time to pursue it further.  If it 
wasn't stable on Mandrake 8, I'd be convinced there was something wrong with 
the hardware - and perhaps there is.  Next week I hope to get time to fix 
this problem once and for all!  :-)
