Well I have tested the 4 major player's int the "Live Cd" Linux market. I used Knoppix, Mepis, Mandrake, and SuSE. I searched for others but I amy have overlooked them. In my "opinion" the 2 best were by far Knoppix and Mepis in that order. Next up Mandrake and SuSE. I was most disapointed with SuSE. It flat out sucked! 4+ minutes to boot if it booted, to many options, and it crashed. I tried all of these distro's on many different types of boxes to get a good feel. Mandrake booted after time, but the apps available would not have been my first choice. Like no Mozilla for example. It had Konqueror only, which I use most often as it starts faster than mozilla, but I would have prefered a choice. Mepis was ok, quick boot, lot's of packages available, and overall user friendly, but, I still had issues with it auto-configuring the correct screen resolutions, on most boxes. I would prefer an OS to bot and not be tweaked before I use it. Overall I liked Knoppix the best. User friendly, auto-detected every box to the "T" and all within 1.5 minutes. My winxp box boots up in 90 seconds as well, but I like the Linux packages better. I am using two way different machines here as well. My xp box is a 1.8ghz AMD Athalon Compaq w/512mb RAM, and my Linux box is an old Compaq w/ Intel PII 450mhz & 64mb RAM. This box has not been rebooted in over 60 days, and not once crashed. My xp box has crashed 1 time in 2 years however it gets rebooted daily! If linux could only use USB for communications (wireless USB nic) I would lose WinXP for good. Although unfortunately for me I do still need SQL+ which I believe is only available for win clients. I may be wrong and if so correct me!! All in all even though I use SuSE at home, I hated the "Live Eval" cd, but Knoppix is still on top for me. Heck wht did you all expect, I hate RH as well. I may try Fedora just to see if they did something right.... <;~ -- 2:48am up 70 days 10:01, 2 users, load average: 0.26, 0.07, 0.02 Linux linux 2.4.20-4GB #1 Mon Mar 17 17:54:44 UTC 2003 i686 unknown unknown GNU/Linux --------------------------------------------------- PLUG-discuss mailing list - PLUG-discuss@lists.plug.phoenix.az.us To subscribe, unsubscribe, or to change you mail settings: http://lists.PLUG.phoenix.az.us/mailman/listinfo/plug-discuss
