Just to put an end to this thread (I'm not very good about finishing 
anything), I found metamail-2.7-29.9.i386.rpm and <>.src.rpm files at 
http://speakeasy.rpmfind.net/
Honorable mention goes to http://rpm.pbone.net/ as a great resource.
I'll be installing Metamail tomorrow, along with Hylafax (all rpm binaries).

Then there are the Cypheus workstations....(tbc - so much for endings)
