A few weeks ago, I attended my first west-side PLUG meeting at GCC. 
There was another first-timer there, a self-proclaimed Linux newbie, I
believe, who was raving about mepis.  (If that person is listening,
please step forward).

I thought the guy said it was based on Debian, not Knoppix.  The website
seems to say that too.  There *is* a lot of enthusiasm building around
mepis.
