Welcome, Alex!  :)
I hadn't heard of OpenVPN until you mentioned it so I'll have to check it
out.  In the past I've just tunneled everything through SSH.

As far as which distro everyone uses, there's no consensus.  Use whatever
makes you smile the widest.
