The old one doesn't read cdr's or any format that is new. IF you find it reads an MS O/S disk, that tells you nothing as to reading cdr's. It has to do with the 'color' of the underside. MS disks are light colored and cdr's are dark...the media is different and the laser just doesn't read it from an old style.
