The GPL is there because tivos run a linux kernel and im sure they use more gpl utilities as well, although they do have some proprietary software that they wrote that does most of the work. As far as hacking up the tivo to do that im not sure. There are a few communities around dedicated to hacking the tivo and such. One is http://tivocommunity.com and they have an "underground" forum.
